These days the environment is a hot topic and huge priority. Energy resources are lessening even as the population continues to increase. Demands for electrical and gas energy are skyrocketing, putting nature and the future itself at risk. To fight back and turn towards a more positive direction, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) was created on a national level. Its mandate was to spread out some $300 million dollars nationwide and ensure that states use those funds to encourage a customer buy-in to the concept of using energy efficient appliances.
The state of California received $35.2 million as their share of the ARRA funds and developed the California Appiance Rebate Program (CARP) to handle the plan. CARP's program had to be approved by the United States Department of Energy and it is overseen by the California Energy Commission.

The decision makers chose to use the funds to aid consumers in purchasing any or all of three appliances that are prevalent to daily living: refrigerators, clothes washers, and room and window air conditioners. With the products selected, they then produced a list of manufacturers and specific models for customers to choose from.
All of the new appliances must be Energy Star listed, meaning that they are energy efficient products. They will zap away less of the valuable energy resources, thus helping to protect the environment while cutting down on their own utility bill.
